A Poem - First Draft

Well, at least it hasn't been like three months since my last post. This is a first draft; don't be too critical. This poem originated out of an imaging exercise:

Hunger steers them to the back yard
Like miners elated over their gold, more hear the call and come.
A dozen, at least, sometimes fifty and then I lose count
Left over meals, their voices sing in delight of their find
An orderly parade of black hopping bandits.

Do they dare attempt the seed guarded by the grey squirrel?
The survival dance begins, as squirrel straightens and lunges forward
Black wings rise into the air and back down again
Another attempt, this one from behind,
the seed travels down the gullet as the victor takes to the air.

The rooftops and trees brim over with life
A scene from Poe, or Hitchcock
They continue to cawl for their roost
The yard is busier than O’hare
Take offs and landings, but no need for air control

As the feast draws to its end the landings become fewer
Footprints in the snow, evidence that there was an army
The talon tracks impressing the chaos
The observation seeing the order
A community, working toward one end.

Writing Journal Practice

Ok, so I've decided to post my writing journal entries. This was today's. I know it's not much but it's practice so...

People: They really are nuts for the most part. They all want what they want when they want it. Then when two people want either the same thing at the same time or different things at the same time all hell breaks loose.

For the most part, though, everyone is just trying to do what he or she can when they can. It doesn’t seem like the majority of individuals is out to get someone else, they’re just having conflicts of needs and time. Each person struggles to achieve their goals while others struggle to achieve theirs at the same time and place. Is it any wonder that there’s conflict?

So, if this is obvious, then why can’t people be decent enough to one another as a means of decreasing this tension and conflict? I really think it’s boiling down to manners here. It seems to me that now a days everyone feels their needs out weigh anyone else’s, so they believe they are entitled to rude and arrogant behavior when a conflict arises.

Let’s stop this nonsense and understand that everyone’s need is just as great as your own. It is no less urgent to them than yours is to you. Step back and be nice about it. Start treating others, as you would want to be treated. It’s really pretty simple. Then perhaps, when everyone has began to build up that trust in human nature again, we can focus on the serious problems facing today’s society, and as a whole figure out how to make life better for everyone.

Back Again

Ok, well I guess I’m going to try this again. I know I haven’t been exactly, oh shall we say, consistent with my posts, but…Anyway, I’m working on it.

So I’ve accepted an internship with Real Services. They are a non-profit organization that assists the elderly with various needs. I’ll be working on grant writing (the primary reason for accepting the job) and also volunteer coordination. I think it will be a great way to break into non-profit grant writing, which I believe I will thoroughly enjoy. I think I would like to make a living at it.

I also have an interview tomorrow with an editor of the local newspaper, in charge of the supplemental inserts. She wants to meet up and see if there is a match in interests. So, this could lead into some nice freelance work on the side.

The wind has been pushing me further and further into the writing direction, as opposed to the librarian direction so…I’m ready to fly with the breeze, “I am a leaf on the wind” as Wash would say. Wash, by the way, was the pilot in the Firefly series and the movie Serenity that was made as a conclusion to the series. It totally rocks, if you’re a Buffy or Angel fan you would like this I’m sure. The same guy who did Buffy & Angel created it. Firefly is different, though. Think space, pirates, and lots of adventure.

I guess that’s it for today. Let’s hope things begin to get more regular now. I’ll be getting a new laptop with my tax returns. That will make writing much easier since I won’t have to share one computer with my online gaming addicted R. Gotta love him.
